The “Why” Behind My Story

As a teenager, life threw challenges at me early.

At only 15, I left home with three garbage bags of clothes, finding temporary shelter under the bleachers at a local baseball park. A coworker eventually took me in, but even then, survival was an uphill battle. I dropped out of high school after Grade 9 and hustled to make ends meet. A job in the mines finally gave me enough stability to rent a trailer and many people in my community had branded me the “loser kid” who wouldn’t amount to anything.

At 18, I got news that would forever change my world—I was going to be a father— But little did I know, this would become the turning point that redefined my whole life.

The Moment That Changed Everything

Being forced to face the grief that comes with the loss of a child is something words can’t express, and nothing seems to ease the pain… I found myself at a crossroads I never expected and couldn’t have imagined— it was there that destiny met me and left me a choice.

At that moment, I made a decision: I would honor my son by building a life that he could be proud of. I would find a way to turn this unimaginable loss into purpose.

The stories I share from the stage are a testament that even our darkest times can be harnessed for good and contribute to a positive outcome— the choice is ours to make.

How I Changed My Path

On the road to recovery, I reached out to key people and organizations with a precise mission in mind — creating a plan that would guide me in becoming a person that helps to save lives. Once laid out, I pursued my new endeavor with determination and didn’t look back.

Two years later, I graduated as valedictorian of my paramedic class and began my career as a paramedic. I spent three years on land ambulance and another two as a flight paramedic on “Bandage 4.” Each day, I carried my son’s memory with me, striving to make a difference.

Life as a Life-Saver

Striving for more, and wanting to continue building on my momentum, a new opportunity emerged—I joined the Ontario Provincial Police.

I took on roles that ranged from frontline patrol to undercover work and emergency response. Later on, I eventually became a K9 handler, working alongside my partner, a black Shepherd-Malinois mix I named Cash after Johnny Cash.

Over nine years, Cash and I responded to more than 1,100 calls before his retirement in 2018.

How I Found My Passion for Speaking

When Cash retired, I stepped into a new chapter, competing and earning a Sergeant role as a Senior Recruiter. Over the next six years, I dedicated myself to transforming how the Ontario Provincial Police brought new talent into the fold.

Then COVID-19 hit. Like so many organizations, we had to reimagine everything—our outreach strategies, the way we connected with people, and how we processed applications. The challenge pushed us to adapt and grow in ways we hadn’t anticipated.

During those years, I traveled across provinces, speaking to thousands of students on stages at colleges and universities. Each time I stood before an audience, I realized the incredible opportunity I had to connect with people, share insights, and inspire action.

Standing on those stages brought a deeper understanding of my purpose. I saw the potential in every room, felt the energy shift as stories resonated, and knew this work could make a real difference.

With over three decades in policing, I’ve gained lessons that shape lives. Those experiences taught me the power of perseverance, the importance of leadership rooted in empathy, and how every challenge holds the seed of growth.

Now, I use those insights to help others uncover their potential and take meaningful steps forward. Wherever you are today, there’s a path toward something greater.
